Throughout the day we received our first official look at Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, found out that Mads Mikkelsen would be playing the main villain, and now we have a few new details about Rachel McAdams' as-yet-unnamed character. As typical with most Marvel productions, the name of the character who McAdams will be playing is being kept under wraps, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was still able to spill a few new details about her character to Entertainment Weekly:
Rachel McAdams plays a fellow surgeon that has a history with Strange and is his sort of lynchpin to his old life, once he steps into he role of a sorcerer. She is someone he connects with at the beginning, and reconnects with, and helps anchor his humanity.
Judging from those comments, it seems like Rachel McAdams' character won't have any ties to the supernatural, at least intially, which chimes with comments that Kevin Feige made earlier in the year when he said that McAdams' character would function as the audience's eyes "to a certain extent." DOCTOR STRANGE executive producer Stephen Broussard said much the same thing to EW, saying that "Rachel McAdams is sort of [Doctor Strange’s] contemporary in the modern-day New York world, before and after he goes on this crazy journey, so, she sees him before, she sees him after. She’s kind of this audience point of view." Although it seems likely that Rachel McAdams' character is being set up as a romantic interest for Dr. Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch wouldn't confirm that other than to say “I’m not sure if I’m allowed to say what the interest is, but I hit on her more than the Ancient One, put it like that.”
DOCTOR STRANGE is set to hit theaters on November 4, 2016.
