Emily Blunt calls Girl on the Train the most challenging role she’s ever had

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN follows Rachel (Emily Blunt), a woman who has been devastated by her recent divorce and drunkenly daydreams about the seemingly perfect life of Scott (Luke Evans) and Megan (Hayley Bennet) on her daily commute as she passes by their house. Then, upon discovering that Megan has gone missing, Rachel suddenly finds herself involved in a potentially fatal mystery. A well-crafted whodunit is always a welcome treat and THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN is quickly looking like it will fit the bill. At the very least, the cast is working hard to bring us something special as Emily Blunt recently told Deadline that she considers her role to be "the most challenging thing she's ever done." She also revealed a little of what drew her to the character of Rachel.

For me it’s more about the portrayal of very damaged women. I just love that it’s about addiction and loneliness and voyeurism and what we think we see and don’t see. I think it’s very relatable. We’ve all ridden the train to work and wondered about the lives of the people on the train, and I think that people relate to that. I love that your heroine, your lead character is the most unreliable witness in the world because she’s a drunk. And yet she’s right, and nobody believes her.The idea of playing a part like that where you just feel like you’re drowning is exciting. I’ve never played a blackout drunk before, so this is new to me now.

Along with Emily Blunt, Luke Evans, and Hayley Bennet, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN also counts Rebecca Ferguson, Édgar Ramírez, Justin Theroux, Lisa Kudrow, and Allison Janney among its cast. Deadline also announced today that Laura Prepon (Orange is the New Black) has joined the film in the role of Carol, the college friend, roommate, and landlord of Rachel.

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN is set for a October 7, 2016 release.
