It's only a matter of time before Spider-Man officially becomes a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – May 6, to be exact, with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. Once that happens though, the machine will really begin rolling on the next reboot of Spider-Man over at Sony Pictures, only this time Marvel Studios will be heavily involved in the direction he takes.
It's quite possible we could get some solid information from Sony as they present this week at CinemaCon, but the rumblings are already beginning to circulate about what a few of the plans are for Spidey's first solo endeavor as a part of the greater MCU.
According to Devin Faraci at Birth.Movies.Death, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, the potential title revealed by Sony's domain registration, is the name the new movie is currently operating under. That could change, but apparently people over at Marvel and Sony really dig it, so it very well may stick.
Furthermore, he reports that Vulture will be in HOMECOMING. Now, to what extent at this point remains unclear. He could be the main villain. He could be a secondary villain. He could be someone the Universe builds to revealing as a bigger force for later. He could be someone Spidey takes out to kick off the movie. There are a lot of possibilities for Vulture's involvement, none of which anyone is set to reveal just yet… but it does sound like he'll be making an appearance period.
Let's not forget… Adrian Toomes was set to be a major part of Sam Raimi's take on Spider-Man, with John Malkovich lined up to play Vulture in SPIDER-MAN 4. However, Sony opted to shift gears and reboot with the two AMAZING SPIDER-MAN films rather than let Raimi carry on with more sequels, and Vulture never came to be.
This may finally be his chance to hit the big screen if things come to pass. We'll have to keep an eye on these developments and ponder if John Malkovich could still be a viable contender for the part.
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, if that title holds up, is on the release date calendar for July 7, 2017.
