Weekend Box Office Report: April 15-17, 2016

The Jungle Book roars to #1!

Audiences clearly wanted to see Disney bring Mowgli and his animal friends to life, putting THE JUNGLE BOOK on top this weekend with an estimated $103.5 million!

Director Jon Favreau's live-action version of Disney's 1967 animated tale (based on Rudyard Kipling's book) had the second-biggest April opening weekend after FURIOUS 7's $147 million start last year. It's also the second-highest opening for a PG rated movie, behind the $116 million first weekend of Disney's own live-action ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

THE JUNGLE BOOK has made a total of $291 million worldwide, although the movie did get a week's head start overseas before opening in North America. Most critics enjoyed their time with Mowgli and the talking CG creatures, with a current 95% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Opening in second place was the sequel BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT with $20.2 million. While the new PG-13 Ice Cube comedy opened lower than the 2002 original BARBERSHOP ($20.6 million) or BARBERSHOP 2: BACK IN BUSINESS ($24.2 million), the latest entry in the franchise only cost a reported $20 million. Critics appreciated the makeover with an average of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Last weekend's winner THE BOSS was nudged down to third place with $10.1 million, a 57% drop from the opening of Melissa McCarthy's latest R-rated comedy.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE moved to fourth with $9 million and a $311 domestic total after four weekends in theaters. Director Zack Snyder's expensive spectacle now has a worldwide total of $827 million, but seems unlikely to hit the $1 billion mark (one analysis claims that despite adding Batman and Wonder Woman to the mix, the movie will end up being less profitable than MAN OF STEEL even after home video and merchandise earnings are included).

Disney's ZOOTOPIA was in fifth place with $8.2 million. The Mouse House's latest animated hit has now been in the top half of the chart for seven weeks, and is up to $882 million worldwide.

In sixth place was the new R-rated release CRIMINAL with a $5.8 million opening. Although the cast includes Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, critics gunned down the $30 million action movie with 26% on Rotten Tomatoes.

MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2 was in seventh with $3.2 million for a $78.6 million global total after a month in release. It was followed by the faith-based duo of MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN and GOD'S NOT DEAD 2, while the Helen Mirren/Alan Rickman/Aaron Paul drone thriller EYE IN THE SKY held the bottom of the list for a second weekend.

Outside the chart, the first-person action flick HARDCORE HENRY disappeared after one week in the Top 10, joined by 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE and THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT. In limited release, the Patrick Stewart thriller GREEN ROOM had a solid $30k per-screen average.

Next weekend brings the Chris Hemsworth/Charlize Theron/Emily Blunt/Jessica Chastain fairy tale spinoff THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR and the Kevin Spacey/Michael Shannon drama ELVIS & NIXON, while limited releases include the Tom Hanks drama A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING.
