T.J Miller joins Ready Player One; Jake Gyllenhaal to star in The Division

Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ernest Cline's "Ready Player One" has been gathering up quite the interesting cast and now THR reports that T.J. Miller is the latest actor to dive into the virtual world known as OASIS. Also starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, Ben Mendelsohn, and Mark Rylance, READY PLAYER ONE follows Wade Watts (Sheridan) as he competes in a treasure hunt against ruthless foes after the reclusive and enigmatic founder (Rylance) of the game dies and offers his fortune as the grand prize. T.J. Miller will play i-R0k in READY PLAYER ONE, an annoying troller in the online forums of the game. Sounds like a good, if obvious, fit.

Although it seems like WARCRAFT won't be the film to break the video game to film curse, that doesn't mean that we've seen the last of them. Variety reports that Ubisoft's The Division will be the latest video game to be adapted for the big-screen and that Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star and produce the film. If, like me, you're not up on what The Division is all about, the third-person shooter is set in "a dystopian New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic. The player, who is an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division, commonly referred to as simply “The Division,” is tasked with helping to rebuild the Division’s operations in Manhattan, investigating the nature of the outbreak and combating criminal activity in its wake." At the moment Ubisoft is searching for a writer for the project.

Ubisoft has been able to attract some big names to their projects by involving their stars heavily in the development process. Their first effort, ASSASSIN'S CREED, stars Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch, a career criminal who finds himself abducted by Abstergo Industries and forced to relive the memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha, an Assassin during the Spanish Inquisition. Will Ubisoft's method prove to be the key of successful video game movies? We'll have to wait until December 21, 2016 to find out.
