Warner Bros. has acted rather deliberately in trying to find the right filmmaker to fill its vacant director's chair on THE FLASH after Seth Grahame-Smith departed the project in late-April. But in doing their due dilligence, the studio has found one DOPE director to steer the film into its place in the DC Cinematic Universe. Rick Famuyiwa, who directed the Sundance darling DOPE and recently the highly-acclaimed HBO film CONFIRMATION, has been picked for the gig that'll see Ezra Miller make his mark as the speedy superhero.
The always popular "creative differences" are what sent Grahame-Smith, who also penned the script for THE FLASH, on his way, so it'll be interesting to see just what state the film Famuyiwa has inherited is in now. Warner Bros. is in the process of course-correcting the DC Cinematic Universe as best as it can after BATMAN V SUPERMAN didn't get quite the overwhelmingly positive reaction they thought it would. As a result, they seem to be skewing away from the more grounded and serious path that Zack Snyder had put them on.
James Wan has spoke repeatedly about trying to make AQUAMAN more "fun," and you'd have to think the same is being said for what they want to do with THE FLASH. I imagine Famuyiwa is a part of that thought process. How much will THE FLASH morph from where Grahame-Smith left it, in order to hit the film's announced March 16, 2018 release date? We'll have to see, but I would guarantee they are looking for something much looser than they had before.
