Although THE MONSTER SQUAD wasn't successful during its initial release, it soon joined the long list of movies which found an audience on home-video and developed a passionate cult following, something screenwriter Shane Black wasn't even aware of. Black spoke with IGN recently to say that he "didn't even realize it had been successful. I loved it, I had fun working on it and it was one of the first things I'd ever written. And it wasn't just that it wasn't a hit – it was a huge failure. No one saw it. I don't know how on earth it caught on years later." As with anything remotely successful, especially if it's steeped in nostalgia, it's only natural that talk of a remake or sequel would be brought up.

Shane Black told IGN that he'd like to give THE MONSTER SQUAD the remake treatment at some point, but IGN countered that a belated sequel which picked up with the same kids thirty years later might be the better option. Black liked the idea, although realized that it would be hard to distance from Stephen King's IT, which also utilized a time jump in order to pick up with the now adult kids from the first half. That said, Shane Black still seemed interested in the possibility.

It would be interesting to have two movies – one The Monster Squad, and one The Monster Squad and they're 30 years apart and so are the kids; the characters have aged. As long as people understood that's what we're doing, I think that could be fun. That's a good idea!

Speaking of sequels and remakes, Shane Black is currently hard at work resurrecting THE PREDATOR for a February 9, 2018 release and production should kick off this September.

What do you folks think? Remake? Sequel? Leave it the hell alone?
