With CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR finally being released on Blu-ray/DVD this week, audiences will get to experience the latest Marvel epic once again (or for the first time) and be re-introduced to the large ensemble cast, including Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/Black Panther. Production on the film will get underway in January and Boseman spoke with Yahoo Movies about what we might expect from the upcoming standalone film, including teasing possible appearances by previous heroes who have taken on the mantle of Black Panther.
There is definitely more of his origin in ‘Black Panther’. You’re going to learn about Wakanda, its culture, its traditions, the past. You can go through all the comic books and know that there’s more Panthers that have existed in the past – that’s origin.
Multiple people have held the title of Black Panther throughout history and typically that role has gone to the King of Wakanda or some member of the Wakandan ruling family. Who knows how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will tackle this element but Boseman's tease that previous Black Panther's may have some part to play is quite interesting.
Some have pointed to Chadwick Boseman's appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR as T'Challa's origin story, but the actor feels that CIVIL WAR was merely a "jumping off point for Black Panther" and that there's a lot more mystery to reveal about the character. I'm not quite as up on my Black Panther lore as others may be, but I'm quite looking forward to discovering more about the character and Wakanda itself in Ryan Coogler's upcoming film once it hits theaters on February 16, 2018.
