No matter what you want for Christmas it pales in comparison to what you will actually be getting. New IPhone? Boo! New tablet? Boo! A friend? Boo! The most magical gift anyone can receive on Christmas is that which Ben Affleck can give, and he will grace us with LIVE BY NIGHT.
Deadline reports that the highly-anticipated gangster drama from Affleck will get an early, limited run starting on December 25. This of course is a move everyone was expecting, as the flick will now have a shot at competing for the 2017 Oscars. But, really, has anyone come to expect anything less than a massive Oscar campaign for Affleck’s directorial efforts? Ever since the trailer debuted early last month, LIVE BY NIGHT (based on the Denis Lehane novel) has generated a massive amount of buzz from film buffs and casual audiences who have been dying for a follow-up to Affleck's Oscar-winning ARGO. And based off said trailer, the movie will not disappoint.
Taking place in the 20’s, LIVE BY NIGHT follows a man named Joe Coughlin (Affleck) who is the son of a famous Boston police captain, but is allured to the word of bootlegging and other nasty dealings, and in his quest for power does whatever he can to rise to the top of the game, including crossing other mob bosses, and wearing the shit out of different hats.
Thanks in part to a star-studded cast (which Oscar voters love), LIVE BY NIGHT will surely be a hot ticket come awards season, but will have to be tremendous to stand-out from other Oscar hopefuls. There are several that also come out on Christmas (whether limited or wide), like Denzel Washington’s FENCES, Morten Tyldum’s PASSENGERS, and the Matthew McConaughey drama GOLD. It will be a crowded year, so NIGHT will have to blow to roof off this place to get ahead. Again, based off this trailer (and his hat, mustn’t forget his hat), Affleck will probably be seeing gold this holiday season.
LIVE BY NIGHT will get an early release this Christmas, and will expand on January 13, 2017 with Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Chris Cooper.
