Weekend Box Office Report: October 14-16, 2016

The Accountant counts to 1!

Ben Affleck's autistic talents for calculations and assassinations put THE ACCOUNTANT on top at the box office this weekend with an estimated opening of $24.7 million!

The R-rated action-thriller from director Gavin O'Connor (WARRIOR) cost a reported $44 million to make. The original tale of math and murder (also featuring Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons) divided critics with a 51% average on Rotten Tomatoes. (The JoBlo review can be found HERE.)

Opening in second place was Kevin Hart's latest stand-up movie KEVIN HART: WHAT NOW? with $11.9 million. The comedian's third stand-up act passed the $10 million start of his 2013 concert movie LET ME EXPLAIN and actually now has the highest opening for a stand-up comedy release.

Hart's R-rated performance feature (captured in front of a sold-out 50,000 seat stadium) reportedly cost $10 million to put together. Most critics found it funny enough to rate a 78% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

In third was last weekend's winner THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN with $11.9 million, slowing 51% from its opening. The R-rated Emily Blunt thriller, adapted from the Paula Hawkins bestseller, has a ten-day domestic total of $46.5 million (grossing just over its reported $45 million cost), plus an additional $33 million from overseas business.

Director Tim Burton's fantasy MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN skipped to fourth place with $8.9 million. The $110 million adaptation of the Ransom Riggs novel has a $65.8 million domestic total but is nearing $200 million worldwide.

The combustible Mark Wahlberg/Kurt Russell drama DEEPWATER HORIZON was in fifth with $6.3 million as director Peter Berg's account of the oil rig disaster has gathered $77 million worldwide. The animated comedy STORKS flapped along in sixth with $5.6 million, with the family feature ascending to a worldwide total of $130 million.

Seven was this week's position for the update of Western THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN with $5.2 million. The Denzel Washington/Chris Pratt action movie has rounded up nearly $150 million worldwide so far.

The teen comedy MIDDLE SCHOOL: THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE was in eighth place with $4.2 million, losing only 38% of business (and one spot on the list) from its modest opening last week.

The Tom Hanks drama SULLY was in ninth with another $2.9 million, and filmmaker Nate Parker's slave biopic THE BIRTH OF A NATION held onto the bottom with $2.7 million after dropping 61% from last weekend's opening.

Outside the chart, the comedy MASTERMINDS went away with the Lupita Nyong'o chess drama QUEEN OF KATWE. Meanwhile, MAX STEEL brought the Mattel action figure to life on 2000 screens but only collected $2.1 million to land with a thunk outside the Top 10.

Next weekend, Tom Cruise goes back to punching and shooting in the ironically titled sequel JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK, spies Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot are neighbors with Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher in the action-comedy KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES, there are more supernatural frights in OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL, and Tyler Perry terrifies in BOO! A MADEA HALLOWEEN. Limited releases include the drama MOONLIGHT, the Ti West-directed Western IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE and Chan-wook Park's crime thriller THE HANDMAIDEN.
