What’s better than one trailer for a movie? Two trailers for a movie! But not three. Three is just greedy. Nope, two is just perfect, and that’s how many we got for the new sci-fi thriller, LIFE, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie from director Daniel Espinosa (SAFE HOUSE, CHILD 44) and writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (DEADPOOL, ZOMBIELAND) depicts a diverse space crew on an interstellar mission to discover life outside our planet, and soon realize life in space is nothing to be f*cked with, because clearly they don’t watch movies.
First up is the main trailer:
The trailer is certainly ominous, but clearly puts more focus on the action and danger of the situation featuring lots of screaming, and the badass shot of Reynolds blasting something with a flame thrower, all before being locked away from the group by Gyllenhaal. That’s what happens when you’re a little pyromaniac, Reynolds. But as cool as this trailer may be, the international trailer is far more eerie and subtle. Check it out!
Though there's still some action (firestarter Reynolds), there are more allusions to the 1979 classic, ALIEN, in this trailer. Not only does it put the focus on the crew and their paranoia, but the trailer also implicates use of the alarm-like “bonging” sound terrifically used in the ALIEN trailer all those years ago. Much like in that preview, this one for LIFE does a great job of giving you an idea of what will befall the crew while still leaving plenty of mystery. And it seems there's another reference in there somewhere…but I can't seem to place my finger on it. Hmm, maybe Jeff Goldblum can help us.
LIFE starring Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada and Ariyon Bakare opens May 26, 2017.
