First international Churchill trailer reveals Brian Cox as Winston Churchill

Following in the footsteps of DEEP IMPACT and ARMAGEDDON, DANTE'S PEAK and VOLCANO, RED PLANET and MISSION TO MARS, as well as countless others, we're about to witness dueling Winston Churchill movies later this year. Our first helping of the Prime Minster of the United Kingdom will arrive with CHURCHILL, which sees Brian Cox taking on the title role. The Jonathan Teplitzky (Broadchurch) directed film takes place shortly before the Allied invasion of Normandy as Churchill desperately tries to maintain control and avoid past mistakes. The first international trailer for CHURCHILL has now been released, check it out!

"When it's all over, what will I be?"

In addition to Brian Cox, CHURCHILL also stars Miranda Richardson, John Slattery, James Purefoy, Julian Wadham, Richard Durden and Ella Purnell. The film doesn't seem to go out of its way to differentiate itself from the typical biopic fare, but I'd watch Brian Cox in just about anything. Unfortunately for CHURCHILL, the other Winston Churchill film looks as though it may walk away with the crown based on the strength of its director and cast alone.

Joe Wright (ATONEMENT) takes the helm of DARKEST HOUR, which stars an unrecognizable Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, as well as John Hurt, Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn and Kristin Scott Thomas. At least the two films will be exploring different periods in Churchill's life, as DARKEST HOUR will begin days after his election as Prime Minister and finds him faced with "exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation." DARKEST HOUR will be released on November 24, 2017.

The official synopsis for CHURCHILL:

June 1944. Allied Forces stand on the brink: a million soldiers are secretly assembled on the south coast of Britain, poised to invade Nazi-occupied Europe. One man stands in their way: Winston Churchill. Fearful of repeating, on his disastrous command, the mass slaughter of 1915, when over 500,000 soldiers were killed on the beaches of Gallipoli. Exhausted by years of war and plagued by depression, Churchill is a shadow of the hero who has resisted Hitler’s Blitzkrieg. Should the D-Day landings fail, he is terrified he’ll be remembered as the architect of carnage. Only the unflinching support of Churchill’s brilliant, unflappable wife Clementine can halt the Prime Minister’s physical and mental collapse.

CHURCHILL is set to open in theaters on June 2, 2017 in the U.S. and June 16, 2017 in the U.K.
