Spider-Man: Homecoming

If you were paying close attention to the new SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING trailer released earlier today, you may have noticed a quick reference to Damage Control, the fictional company which specializes in cleaning up the messes which superheroes leave in their wake. While speaking with Fandango, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING director Jon Watts confirmed the reference and was asked whether the inclusion of the company might open up more possibilities for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yeah, possibly. For me, in thinking about this movie, it just fit in with our overall philosophy with the kind of story we wanted to tell. In the same way that Peter gives us the ground level view of what it’s like to be a 15-year-old kid in a New York City that was almost destroyed by aliens before the Avengers showed up. You also wonder after all those huge messes are made, who’s sent in to clean up? Is it the normal people who would be hired to do something like that? Does it become a government operation? Is it dangerous? What do you do with all the alien body parts that you find? I really like asking those practical questions about this world, and then using that to drive the story.

Almost two years ago it was announced that ABC was developing a half-hour, single-camera sitcom based upon Damage Control, but we haven't heard all that much about the show since then. If the project isn't dead, it's possible that its inclusion in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING will give it a jump-start.

Jon Watts spilled a few more details about the film, which included confirming that SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING will "absolutely" have a post-credits scene. "How disappointing would it be if there was just nothing?" Watts said with a laugh, "like if this was the one movie where we said, nope, no after-credits scene!" Watts wouldn't say whether or not he'd be back for the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING sequel, but he did comment on Sony's recent announcement of a Venom movie, saying that it's not connected to his film at all.

It’s not connected to the Marvel world, so that’s really intriguing… what that will be. I don’t know anything about it. It’s not connected, so there’s not that overlap. I’m only focused on my movie right now.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is set for a July 7, 2017 release.
