Edgar Wright’s film Grasshopper Jungle might get picked up by New Regency

One thing I really love about Edgar Wright, is that while he has a distinctive and eclectic style, he doesn't stay in one genre. From zombies, to buddy-cops, to the end of the world, to crime heists, to whatever SCOTT PILGRIM was, he puts his unique stamp on a variety of different stories. Which always keeps his movies fresh. And his next film is no exception.

Wright is going to be adapting the YA giant monster novel GRASSHOPPER JUNGLE about a teen dealing with sexual confusion in the midst of a six-foot-tall mantis apocalypse. Which definitely sounds interesting. There haven't been any serious giant insect movies in a long time (the closest was EIGHT-LEGGED FREAKS like 15 years ago, and even then it was a stupid comedy), so I'm down to see Wright's take on that genre. And while I don't think he'll go the po-faced route like Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA remake or anything (seeing as it also deals a lot with teen angst and adolescent romance), hopefully he'll still keep the threat real and scary, the way he did the zombies in the ostensible comedy SHAUN OF THE DEAD.

Meanwhile, it seems New Regency has won a bidding war for the rights to distribute the film – against such competitors as Netflix – and is in final negotiations to pick up the project. This is definitely on my top anticipated films for sure now.

While there's no official release date for GRASSHOPPER'S JUNGLE at the moment, Wright's next film will be the promising-looking BABY DRIVER, coming out June 28th, 2017.
