Margot Robbie (SUICIDE SQUAD) may soon be joining the pantheon of actresses who have portrayed Queen Elizabeth I of England as Variety reports that Robbie is currently in negotiations to play the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty in MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS.

The film, which is to be helmed by theatre director Josie Rourke, will be "based on the true story of Mary Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England, only to find herself condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution." If Robbie's deal is finalized, she would star in the film alongside Saoirse Ronan (THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL) who will be playing Mary. The project hasn't officially been greenlit just yet, but sources say that things are heading in the right direction and MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS could go into production later this year. Everyone needs a decent period flick under their belt, and hopefully this will prove to be a good one for Margot Robbie.

The role of Queen Elizabeth I has been filled many times throughout the history of film and television, with actresses such as Miranda Richardson, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Redgrave, Bette Davis, Jean Simmons, Cate Blanchett and many more putting their spin on the Queen.

Since exploding onto the scene with Martin Scorsese's THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, Margot Robbie has been keeping her schedule pretty damn full. She will next be seen in GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN, in which she plays the wife of Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne, on November 10, 2017. After which she will appear in Vaughn Stein's noir thriller TERMINAL as a mysterious waitress who leads a dangerous double life, followed by playing disgraced skater Tonya Harding in Craig Gillespie I, TONYA. She's also set to reprise her role of Harley Quinn for David Ayer's GOTHAM CITY SIRENS.
