Fate of the Furious in first again!
Vin Diesel's vehicular family remained the biggest attraction at the box office this weekend, keeping THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS ahead of the competition with an estimated $38.6 million!
The eighth chapter of the franchise hit the brakes by 60% from its opening last week for a ten-day domestic total of $163.5 million (running behind the $171 million ten-day total for FAST & FURIOUS 6 and the $251 million ten-day total of FURIOUS 7).
But the $250 million sequel is a big winner with international audiences, racing to a worldwide total of $908 million after two weekends.
It was an otherwise relatively quiet weekend before the summer movie season starts with full force in a couple of weeks, with Dreamworks' animated THE BOSS BABY holding onto second with $12.7 million for a domestic total of $136.9 million after a month in theaters.
Disney's live-action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST stayed in third place with another $9.9 million as the Bill Condon-directed romance reached a worldwide total of $1.1 billion on its sixth weekend.
Opening in fourth was the new nature documentary BORN IN CHINA with $5.1 million. Disney's panda-filled Earth Day release captured critics with 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The GOING IN STYLE remake kept going in fifth place with $5 million, bringing the Morgan Freeman/Michael Caine/Alan Arkin comedy to a domestic total of $31.5 million.
SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE was in sixth with $4.8 million as the tiny blue folks have scampered to a worldwide total of $133 million (on a reported $60 million budget).
The new R-rated thriller UNFORGETTABLE was mostly forgotten in seventh place with a $4.8 million opening. The Rosario Dawson/Katherine Heigl showdown cost a reported $12 million, and left most critics cold with a 25% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
The Chris Evans/Jenny Slate drama GIFTED pushed out to almost 2000 screens and came in eighth place with $4.5 million. The Marc Webb-directed effort has a $10.7 million total after expanding from limited release.
In ninth place was the new Christian Bale/Oscar Isaac war drama THE PROMISE with an opening of $4 million — not the best start for a release that cost a reported $90 million.
The fact-based love triangle set during the Armenian Genocide was appreciated more for its ambition than the result by critics, who gave it a 45% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review can be found HERE).
Expanding from limited release, the jungle adventure THE LOST CITY OF Z climbed onto the list in tenth with $2.1 million on 610 screens. Director James Gray's true story of explorer Percy Fawcett (played by Charlie Hunnam) scored a solid 87% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes, and the JoBlo review is HERE.
Outside the chart, Jordan Peele's horror-thriller GET OUT finally fell out of the Top 10 after two months (with a $170 million domestic total), and KONG: SKULL ISLAND, POWER RANGERS and THE CASE FOR CHRIST got out with it. Filmmaker Ben Wheatley's R-rated crime-comedy FREE FIRE opened on 1000 screens for $1 million, and the Ridley Scott-produced "found footage" sci-fi movie PHOENIX FORGOTTEN was released on nearly 1600 screens for a $2 million opening.
Next weekend offers the Tom Hanks/Emma Watson/John Boyega tech thriller THE CIRCLE and the street magician action-drama SLEIGHT.
