Music festivals are huge business nowadays, with prime destinations like Coachella and South by Southwest acting as havens for future book shops hippies, hipster stereotypes and your general non-bather. But what if one went horribly wrong, and all the attendees were essentially trapped in a real-life, smelly, crowded nightmare from hell – fit with horrible music and bad falafel. Seth Rogen and The Lonely Island will create this madness in a new movie their working on, which they announced in light of a recent music festival catastrophe.
Not much is known about the upcoming movie, but Rogen tweeted about its existence after an attempt at a luxury music festival, Fyre Festival, has made headlines after attendees paid thousands for tickets and were met by a location swamped with stray dogs and zero advertised paradise amenities.
This seems like a good time to mention the movie we are making with @thelonelyisland about a music festival that goes HORRIBLY WRONG.

For real, thinking about suing #FyreFestival for stealing our idea. https://t.co/uiLxhzLg85

The timing couldn't have been more coincidental, and needless to say Rogen and Island have plenty more material to work with. Taking place on an island once owned by Pablo Escobar, the festival was supposed to act as an island retreat mixed with a top-notch music festival. When people arrived, though, they noticed there was a shocking lack of organization and leadership, on top of a litany of other issues (like the below tweet about a "luxury dinner"). Some attendees were even making comparisons to LORD OF THE FLIES.
The dinner that @fyrefestival promised us was catered by Steven Starr is literally bread, cheese, and salad with dressing. #fyrefestival pic.twitter.com/I8d0UlSNbd

Lonely Island's recent comedy about the music world, POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING, was met with critical praise but bombed at the box office making only $9 million. Hopefully the comparison to a real-life event can give this new movie a little extra street-cred now, especially with audiences now knowing such a festival disaster is too possible.
POPSTAR was one of the most underrated movies of 2016 and I can't wait to see more from Island in the movie biz. Even MACGRUBER (directed by Island's Jorma Taccone) didn't get the proper praise it deserved. Now teaming with Rogen, chances are they can top POPSTAR, both in hilarity and box office revenue. At least we know it can't be a bigger disaster than cheese sandwiches with "salad".
