It’s a tough choice to pick the most hilariously bad movie. But despite the gleeful horribleness of movies like TROLLS 2, THE ROOM from Tommy Wiseau has been given the title of “the CITIZEN KANE of bad movies”, which pretty much means it takes the cake. However, the movie about the disastrous making of the train wreck is being met with nothing but praise, and it’s just secured a prime award season release.
According to a press release, New Line Cinema and A24 are planning to release the James Franco flick, THE DISASTER ARTIST, on December 8, with them getting domestic distribution right and Warner Bros. handling international distribution. The movie was met with standing ovations and endless praise coming out of South by Southwest Film Festival, and it appears the studios are looking to ride that wave all the way to the bank.
Based on a book of the same name by Greg Sestero (who played Mark in the movie) and Tom Bissell the movie stars James Franco (as Wiseau), Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver, Ari Graynor, and Jason Mantzoukas. Franco has been receiving a ton of acclaim for playing the delusional and eccentric Wiseau, as well as for his direction of the movie, with many considering it a modern day ED WOOD.
I’m currently reading the book the movie is based on, and I gotta say it’s ripe for the kind of showbiz comedy Franco is going for. Wiseau is such an odd, unbelievable human being, and how he approached making this movie was so stupendously ludicrous it’s like watching the breaks give out on the train before it crashes into a nuclear plant. You know carnage is coming but you have to see how it goes down. A lot of us have seen THE ROOM and know how that disaster played out, but the story behind it is just as entertaining, and ARTIST is surely one of my must-see films for the year.
THE DISASTER ARTIST arrives December 8.
