The dancing queens to return for a sequel to Mamma Mia

Mamma Mia Here We Go Again

I hope you're ready for the music of ABBA as sung by Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried and Colin Firth, because Universal Pictures have announced that they're currently moving forward on a sequel to MAMMA MIA!. It's been close to ten years since the release of the first film, but as MAMMA MIA! took in over $600 million with a $52 million budget, the better question might be, why haven't they done this sooner?

Dubbed MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN!, the upcoming sequel will be an all-new original musical based once again on the songs of ABBA. The soundtrack will feature many of the ABBA songs which didn't pop up in the original film, as well as the return of a few favourites. It hasn't yet been announced who will be starring in the sequel, but Universal expects that much of the original cast will return along with a few new additions. Ol Parker (THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL) is attached to write and direct MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN!, which is already set for a July 20, 2018 release.

Not much is known about the story-line of MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN! just yet, but THR says that the film could be both a prequel and a sequel. The returning cast members will be featured in the sequences set in the present, while new actors would be brought in to play younger versions of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and the rest. I suppose we do need a new movie to drunkenly sing along to at two in the morning.

Once again, MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN! will hit theaters on July 20, 2018.
