You can file this under news I didn't expect to hear today; Deadline reports that Warner Bros. is currently getting the wheels spinning on a sequel to THE ACCOUNTANT. The crime-thriller, which was released just last year, followed Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a math savant who worked as a freelance accountant for some of the world's most dangerous criminal organizations. When the shit hit the fan, as it always must, Christian used the extensive military training he had as a child in order to protect himself.
Both Ben Affleck and director Gavin O'Conner are in talks to return, along with the producers Lynette Howell Taylor and Mark Williams, and once those deals are finalized, they'll begin working out the beats of the story. The sequel will also likely include Jon Bernthal, a character who was important to the events of the first film. I wouldn't have expected THE ACCOUNTANT to get the sequel treatment, but with a budget of just $44 million and a worldwide gross of over $155 million, I suppose Warner Bros. is eager to see if they can expand the story with similar results.
Is there room for a sequel to THE ACCOUNTANT in your hearts?
Aside from the JUSTICE LEAGUE reshoots under the direction of Joss Whedon, the only other project Ben Affleck has on his slate is THE BATMAN, which Affleck was set to direct before he dropped out and was replaced by Matt Reeves. It's not known when production on THE BATMAN will get underway, but Matt Reeves likely won't dive deeply into the film until after the release of WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES on July 14th. Depending on how it shakes out, it's possible that we might even see THE ACCOUNTANT 2 before THE BATMAN. Stranger things have happened.
The official synopsis for THE ACCOUNTANT:
Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.
Ben Affleck will next be seen in in JUSTICE LEAGUE on November 17, 2017.
