The Grudge reboot

Considering that the extreme critical thrashing and disappointing opening weekend of RINGS led to Paramount Pictures cancelling their reboot of FRIDAY THE 13TH, it doesn't seem like the time to move forward with another J-horror remake, but here we go again.

Deadline reports that Ghost House Pictures have tapped Nicolas Pesce (THE EYES OF MY MOTHER) to direct a reboot of THE GRUDGE. Described as a curse which is born when someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage or extreme sorrow, THE GRUDGE is an entity which is created where the person died, and those that encounter this entity typically die themselves, passing the curse from victim to victim. The 2004 film, itself a remake of the Japanese horror-thriller JU-ON, starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as an exchange student and caretaker who encounters the curse firsthand. This latest reboot has been in the works for several years and Jeff Buhler (MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN) was hired to pen the script, but Deadline adds that Pesce will also be rewriting Buhler's script in addition to directing.

THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, Nicolas Pesce's directorial debut, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year, and our own JimmyO called it "one of the most disturbingly frightening horror films of the year – even if it can be quite unpleasant." THE EYES OF MY MOTHER follows a young, lonely woman who is consumed by her deepest and darkest desires after tragedy strikes her quiet country life. I'm not certain that I'm really aching for the return of THE GRUDGE, but if it has to be done, Pesce sounds like he will be able craft something twisted

Does THE GRUDGE need another reboot?
