I said hot damn! It looks as if Alex Garland, screenwriter of the 2014 sci-fi thriller EX MACHINA is making his way to the small screen courtesy of FX Productions. Today, we've learned that he Oscar-nominated writer, producer and director is now set to develop, write, and produce a TV series for the FX networks.
As you might recall, Garland was nominated for an Oscar in 2016 for best original screenplay in regard to his work on EX MACHINA, which had also netted him the DGA award for outstanding directorial achievement of a first-time director. Other than EX MACHINA, Garland has also penned the screenplays for the zombie game-changer 28 DAYS LATER, the enigmatic and terrifying SUNSHINE, as well as the films DREDD and NEVER LET ME GO. Up next for Garland is ANNIHILATION, which stars Natalie Portman and tells the story of a biologist who signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature no longer apply.
When commenting on the deal, president of original programming of FX Networks and FX Productions, Eric Schrier said, “Alex’s gifts as a writer have long been apparent, and he made a huge impression with his directorial debut Ex Machina. We are thrilled that he is bringing his talents as a writer and director to television through FX Productions. We have enormous respect for his uncompromising creative vision and we look forward to supporting his original and bold ideas.”
I'll say it again, hot damn! As you can probably tell, I really dig Garland's body of work, and am very much looking forward to seeing what he can produce when given access to the long-game format of a serialized television project. What about you? Are you excited for this? Would you like for Garland to stay in the realm of science fiction, or perhaps try his hand at something entirely different? Let us know in the comments section below.
Garland's ANNIHILATION is scheduled for a 2018 release.
