When David Ayer‘s BRIGHT was first announced, I wasn’t entirely sure what to make of it, after all, a world where magical creatures such as orcs, elves, and fairies live alongside humans from the director of FURY and END OF WATCH didn’t exactly strike me as something he’d want to tackle, but little by little, BRIGHT has been winning me over. Will Smith stars as Ward, a human cop who is forced to partner up with Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton). Together, they must battle their own personal differences as well as protect a young elf and a deadly magic wand which grants wishes. Fresh off its debut at San Diego Comic-Con, the first full-length trailer for BRIGHT has been revealed. Check it out!
“Why is there a fairy at the bird feeder again?”
It definitely looks like a David Ayer film, just with the addition of all manner of magical creatures. Works for me. As for what a Bright actually is, it’s apparently a magic user. Sadly, humans can’t touch magic wands in this world or they’d just obliterate. Damn. Keep an eye out for our write-up from the BRIGHT and DEATH NOTE Comic-Con panel shortly for more goodies.
The official synopsis for BRIGHT:
Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a deadly, thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.
BRIGHT will debut on Netflix on December 22, 2017.
