Dope director Rick Famuyiwa set to direct Son of Shaolin

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Director Rick Famuyiwa‘s film DOPE made a splash in the indie scene, and apparently led to many meeting and potential projects. In fact he was this close to directing the DCEU FLASH film (I assume before it was a FLASHPOINT adaptation).
Well, now he’s finally chosen to do an adaptation of another comic, this one an Image comic called SON OF SHAOLIN. Not only that, but The Rock is also producing it though his Seven Bucks Productions banner.

Anyway, here’s the synopsis:

Son of Shaolin offers a kung-fu epic set in the back alleys and subway tunnels of Harlem, New York. Kyrie, an aspiring street artist who is struggling to make ends meet, learns that he is the last living descendant of a secret sect of ancient Shaolin elders. Confused and unsure of where to turn, he finds a father figure in the mysterious Master Fong. Fong trains Kyrie in martial arts in anticipation of an attack from Red Fist, a relentless killer who has already murdered the rest of Kyrie’s bloodline.

Not going to lie, that plot synopsis isn’t wowing me (especially the goddamn “chosen one” angle). But if there’s enough style and badass fight scenes, I’ll be down.

Meanwhile, any fans of the SON OF SHAOLIN graphic novel? And if so, what do you think of Famuyiwa directing it? Either way, sound off below.
