Jessie T. Usher to play son of Shaft; Jackson and Roundtree to reprise

Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?

(Shaft)

Ya damn right!

Word on the street is that New Line and director Tim Story have chosen Jessie T. Usher as the offspring of detective John Shaft for the studio's forthcoming SON OF SHAFT. I can dig that, man. What I can also groove on is that Samuel L. Jackson is said to be negotiating a deal to reprise his role as the smooth-talkin', no jive toleratin' action icon.

For now, sources are also claiming that Richard Roundtree, who appeared in the original 1971 film (and again in the 2000 John Singleton reboot), will return as well. The script for the film is being penned by Kenya Barris and is expected to begin filming later this fall.

From what I've read via Deadline Hollywood, it sounds as if the search for the right man to play Shaft's son was a long and exhaustive process. You might recall Usher from his turn as Dylan Hiller, son to Will Smith's Captain Steven Hiller character, in INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE. Now, Usher will star as the son of Shaft who, after long being estranged from his father, finds himself teamed up with him. The young man is an FBI agent, a cyber expert, and the partnership with dad is an uneasy collision of old school meets new school.

Can you dig it? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.
