Many of us still have fond memories of getting the crap scared out of us by "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," not necessarily by the tales themselves, but more so by the unnerving illustrations by Stephen Gammell. CBS Films acquired the rights to the children's book series several years ago, and last year, Guillermo del Toro came on-board to develop the project which he would potentially direct. Any del Toro fan worth their salt knows not to take his involvement as a guarantee, as the director seems to depart projects more often than not, and it seems that Guillermo del Toro has indeed stepped aside from SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK. D'oh.
Although Guillermo del Toro will remain on-board as a producer, Deadline reports that André Øvredal will be tackling directing duties. Kevin Hagerman and Dan Hagerman (THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE) wrote the most recent draft for the film, which is set to follow a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town. Production on SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK is expected to get underway next summer. Known for TROLLHUNTERS and THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE, Øvredal obviously knows his way around a frightening scene, and although he may not be Guillermo del Toro, there's plenty of reason to believe that the long-awaited big-screen adaptation of "Scary Stories to tell in the Dark" will still scares the pants off of us, again.
