Donald Glover talks working with Ron Howard on Solo: A Star Wars Story

Any faith fans had in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY was shaken last summer when it was announced directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were leaving the project. Since then veteran director Ron Howard has stepped in, with many speculating he was reshooting a giant chunk of the movie. As it turns out not that much else was redone, at least not for Donald Glover, who didn’t do a ton of work with Howard once he came on.

Glover was on a panel the other day speaking to the Television Critics Association about the second season of ATLANTA (via /Film), and after he spoke with some reporters. There he was asked about SOLO, and he mentioned how he didn’t do a ton of work with Howard, and how the director wanted to change as little as possible of what they had been doing:

Not a ton actually. Not a lot at all, at least not for me. I think we’ve all never been faced with anything like that and I think he did a good job of coming and tell us he didn’t want to change what we were doing at all. He wanted us to remain confident in our vision. He just wanted to sculpt it in a way.

One of the scenes he did shoot will be quite a unique moment in the Star Wars canon, and one that involves Glover’s character, Lando Calrissian, walking aboard the Millennium Falcon:

I remember going on set one of the first times, he was like, “Yeah, I want to follow you onto the Millennium Falcon and do this thing.” I was like, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen the outside go into the inside.” He’s like, “Yeah, no one’s ever done that shot.” As a fan I was like yeah, I was really excited. I know there’s been a lot of talk in the press about this movie but for me anyway, it was a dream and also it looks really cool to me.

There’s been a lot of anxiety in the fan community over this movie, fearing that the director swap meant the movie was going off the rails, and that Howard is trying to fit all the pieces together. But both Thandie Newton and now Glover have both come out and said they haven't had to do a lot of new stuff since Howard came on. Everyone involved seems super pleased with what we’re going to get, and perhaps we’ll get a taste soon when that glorious trailer drops. Really taking your sweet time on that one, aren’t you Disney?
