Warner Bros. has announced that David F. Sandberg's SHAZAM! will now arrive in theaters beginning on April 5, 2019, thereby occupying one of the dates DC had previously set for one of the studio's many tentpole comic book-related feature films.
Starring CHUCK's Zachary Levi as SHAZAM!; Asther Angel as young Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddie Freeman; Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield a.k.a. Mary Marvel; and Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Silvana, DC Entertainment's superhero action flick is in line to be scripted by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.
As a part of DC's legendary pantheon of caped characters, SHAZAM! tells the story of Billy Batson, a scrappy foster child who escapes to the Rock of Eternity where he meets a powerful wizard who grants him a series of ancient powers. Imbued with the abilities of six legendary figures, Billy is able to transform into an adult superhero by shouting the word "Shazam!" Once he's all suped up, Shazam is able to fly, has super strength, and can summon lightning from the sky with the greatest of ease.
After making the announcement that SHAZAM! will occupy the April 5, 2019 spot, Warner Bros. has since removed the project scheduled for a July 27th release. One would presume that the July spot was originally RSVPed for SHAZAM!, though with so many changes being made to the DCEU, it's possible that another film had been scrapped thanks in-part to the dismal box office returns for Zack Snyder's JUSTICE LEAGUE.
