SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, the prequel movie about Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich) is four months away from release and we have seen nothing in the way of promotion. Aside from behind-the-scenes pics, we have seen no official images or even a small teaser for the summer blockbuster. That may all change as of this Sunday, as it’s rumored that SOLO may kick off its marketing campaign during the Super Bowl.
Word ‘round the fire is that something may drop for the highly-anticipated sci-fi film, though Disney is declining to comment on the matter. The lack of promotion has only furthered speculation the movie is having trouble coming together, anxieties that hit a fever pitch when Ron Howard took over after directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller left the project.
Though people around the internet continue to attack the movie over assumptions it’s not up to snuff, the reasoning for why the movie could be waiting for promotion is sound. THE LAST JEDI has still been making its run in theaters, and marketing experts believe Disney has been waiting for the buzz to cool down before jumping into promoting SOLO. However, if Disney knew anything about Star Wars fans it’s that the only thing they like better than some Star Wars is even more Star Wars. Lay it all on us!
Though SOLO is up in the air, we can expect to see other movies advertised during the game. New footage for JURASSIC WORLD; FALLEN KINGDOM, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, SKYSCRAPER with Dwayne Johnson and (maybe) CLOVERFIELD 3 are expected to drop. On top of that, BLACK PANTHER will get a new spot as its release looms, and word is we could see new footage of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.
The fact that SOLO has gotten zero promotion would rub anyone the wrong way, as that hints something could be seriously wrong with the product. But the logic is sound that Disney is just waiting for the heat to die down over THE LAST JEDI. Marvel movies don’t have to wait for such things, as fans are already expecting the next links in the chain. But Star Wars movies are such singular, massive events that teasing two at once seems like too much to juggle. Maybe they shouldn’t have made it a summer release then, but hey, I don’t have a marketing degree.
SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY arrives May 25.
