After experiencing a long, long wait to see if Daniel Craig would return to play Bond (he will), now it’s time for the long, long wait to see who will direct BOND 25. Names like Christopher Nolan (DUNKIRK) and Denis Villeneuve (BLADE RUNNER 2049) have been thrown around, but sadly, it appears they won’t take on the flick. We can now add another high-profile candidate to the pile, as it appears the studio is very interested in nabbing Oscar-winner Danny Boyle to bring the British spy to the big screen.
Variety got the scoop that franchise owners MGM and Eon have Boyle is “high on their list” to direct the latest installment of the franchise, and they’ve been keen on working with him for years now. Though they may approach him with an offer, sources were clear that no such offer has been made at this time.
The studios have been looking at him for a Bond movie ever since SKYFALL and SPECTRE, projects that eventually went to Sam Mendes. Director Yann Demange (WHITE BOY RICK) is also a name on their list but offering the project to Boyle would be part of the studios’ last effort to get a major name attached.
SKYFALL stands as the most successful Bond movie ever, but SPECTRE took a noticeable drop at the box office. The mediocre reviews possibly had something to do with it, and now the studios are perhaps looking at a new direction to take the series. Boyle would bring a different kind of visual aesthetic and energy to the series, and it would no doubt yield fascinating results. I’m on board the Boyle train, for sure, so I hope it all works out.
BOND 25 is set for November 2019.
