Horror remakes that fail to live up to their predecessors is an all too common occurrence in Hollywood, with many even failing to elicit so much as a chill. One highly-discussed film is the upcoming SUSPIRIA remake from Luca Guadagnino (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME), and the movie screened its first, grisly footage at CinemaCon in front of a horrified audience. If word is to be believed, this movie may deliver on everything we’re expecting it to (i.e. gruesome, horrific violence).
Guadagnino and star Dakota Johnson were on hand to screen the footage as part of the Amazon Studios presentation, and needless to say, the audience was not at all prepared for what they saw. In the footage, Johnson is dancing in a ballet studio as her instructor, Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton) stands nearby. Unbeknownst to them, another woman is in a room of mirrors being tossed and thrown around, matching Johnson’s movements like a voodoo doll. As Johnson swings her arms and moves around, the poor woman is having her arms snapped and body cracked in all sorts of ways it shouldn’t.

Those in attendance quickly took to social media to describe what they saw, and all of them hinted at something truly graphic and haunting.
First clip from Suspiria invokes a dancer being thrown around like a rag doll telekinetically in a mirrored rehearsal space, bones breaking, becoming a contorted mess. Very gruesome and hard to watch. This film will make most people feel uneasy. #CinemaCon

Ummm I am traumatized after seeing a scene from "Suspiria" in which Dakota Johnson controls the body of another woman as she dances. The woman's body literally cracks in half. She is like, torn apart. Spitting, urinating, bleeding. It's… A lot. #CinemaCon

Amazon just world premiered a scene from Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria' remake and it's one of the most fucked up things I've ever seen at #CinemaCon. People at my table turned away from the screen. All I can say is it's beyond extreme and gross and I need to see more.

Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria Dakota Johnson dance scene clip is bone-wrenchingly horrific. And Timothee Chalamet and Steve Cartel are Oscar-bound with Beautiful Boy.

This one may give #Hereditary a run for its money on the most F'd up movie of 2018. pic.twitter.com/g1FY0SCZiL— A girl has no name (@THATJacqueline) April 26, 2018
Daaaamn! Props to Amazon for playing the sickest, gnarliest, most intense clip from #Suspiria to 3,000 people at this lunch. It features a girl (Dakota Johnson) dancing while another girl is being thrown around, body contorted in nasty ways. Wild & bold#CinemaCon

Someone at my table threw their napkin down, said “uh, no”, and walked out.

The footage was also met with the release of the movie’s first teaser poster which is, um, not as cool as the footage. Still, that first glimpse at the movie sounds extremely gruesome, which is something fans of the Dario Argento original are probably hoping for. As much as I like horror movies I have trouble with the kind of bone-cracking violence in these kinds of movies, so it sounds like my popcorn bag will have to double as a vomit container. If that was your mission, Guadagnino, then I salute you.
