Several days ago we told you that Mark Wahlberg was pushing for Mel Gibson to join him in THE SIX BILLION DOLLAR MAN, but that one of the things which could prevent him from taking part was that Gibson was preparing to direct DESTROYER, a World War II drama which tells the tale of how the crew of the USS Laffey "heroically withstood twenty-two kamikaze attacks at Okinawa in what the US Navy called 'one of the great sea epics of the war.'" Now, it seems that Gibson is eyeing Mark Wahlberg to join him on DESTROYER. These guys can't get enough of each other.
According to The Wrap, Mel Gibson is eyeing Mark Wahlberg for a "key role" in DESTROYER, but representatives for the studio and actors have declined to comment, so don't mark this down as a sure thing. Scripted by Rosalind Ross, DESTROYER is based upon John Wukovits' nonfiction book "Hell From the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II’s Greatest Kamikaze Attack," and Wukovits used personal interviews with the survivors, the memoirs of crew members, and the sailors’ wartime correspondence in order to construct the story. As for THE SIX BILLION DOLLAR MAN, Mark Wahlberg will star as Steve Austin, a military officer who is given bionic body parts and extraordinary abilities by a secret government program after a horrific accident nearly ends his life. Production on the film is expected to get underway this summer before DESTROYER is set to shoot, and Warner Bros. has already slated the film for a May 31, 2019 release.
