Ryan Reynolds recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that an early draft of DEADPOOL 2 featured the Merc with a Mouth as the father of a child. Wait, what? Yeah, apparently, Reynolds and his co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were toying with the idea of turning Deadpool into Dadpool!
“The genesis of it was “What if Deadpool had a child?” Like, what if we started five years later and what would that be like? By page 1.5, it was totally untenable,” Reynolds told EW. “We were just like, ‘Nope. Nope. No, no, no. This is never, ever going to work.’ We went back to the drawing board and kind of reworked it in a way about wanting to have a child, which is something that so many people I know experience on a daily basis — wanting to have a child but can’t.”
Oh wow. Can you imagine if this idea had come to fruition? I could see the child-rearing montage now: Dadpool teaching his young one how to properly sharpen a sword, maybe a little Chimichanga 101, or … if Fox was feeling really bold, an awkward father/son chat about the wonders of masturbation. Hey, don't look at me like that, this is Deadpool we're talking about here. Anyway, Reynolds also reported to EW that although the merc does not father a child in the film, there are still some great family values at the core of DEADPOOL 2. “The first movie is a love story masquerading as a comic-book movie, and this one is kind of a family film masquerading as a comic-book film again.”
In more Deadpool related news, Fox has unveiled a new poster for the upcoming action film which takes a stab at the studio's latest Wolverine film, LOGAN. The one-sheet features a colorful collage of the film's key players, each of them strategically placed around a lounging Deadpool. In looking at the image, its either the best or worst Tunnel of Love scenario I've ever seen, depending on your preference. My favorite aspect of the new print is that it even includes a kitchen sink in the bottom right corner. Oh Fox, please cut the DEADPOOL 2 PR department another check, they certainly deserve it.
