A lot of westerns are grim, bleak affairs that act as meditations on the brutality of man. In other words, there’s room in the genre for a movie that cracks a few jokes here and there. THE SISTERS BROTHERS is that hybrid of dark comedy and classic western starring Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed from acclaimed writer/director Jacques Audiard (A PROPHET, DHEEPAN). The movie centers on two assassins (Phoenix and Reilly) who hired to kill a man (Ahmed) who stole from his boss. The siblings are working with a prospector (Gyllenhaal) who is trying to get close to the man, but things eventually get…complicated. Check out the first trailer above!
SISTERS BROTHERS marks the first film for Audiard since his award-winning DHEEPAN in 2015, as well as his English language debut. The movie is still going through some post-production, and though it doesn’t have a specific release date, we can expect it fall of this year, perhaps with an early screening at some major festivals. The movie looks fantastic and an exceptional cast, so this is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated small releases of the fall season.
THE SISTERS BROTHERS arrives later this year.
