The sixth and final season of HOUSE OF CARDS will undergo a bit of a shakeup after the removal of Kevin Spacey, now with Robin Wright taking over the lead role. Now Wright's Claire Underwood (wife of Spacey’s Frank Underwood) is president of the United States, and you can take a look at the new leader of the free world in the first images from this final season.
The pics come via a press release from Netflix which also says Wright will be joined by series regular Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott and Boris McGiver this season. They don’t reveal a release date, but they do say the season will come out later this year, hinting at a fall release.
The show’s final season had to undergo a massive production shift late last year when Spacey was accused of numerous acts of sexual assault, leading to his firing from the show. As a result, the season had to be reconfigured and episodes went through reshoots to factor in his absence. The fifth season ended with the lead up to Claire taking over the presidency, teasing the political feud between her and Frank. We aren’t sure how everything will be handled at the start of season six, but there’s much speculation that Frank will be dead. That, or they’ll simply say the political life was too much for him and he left to go make jewelry in Tahiti. Both are plausible.
I'm interested to see how this final season will be handled given that Spacey won't be back, but in terms of character focus, I've always loved Wright's Claire Underwood, so I'm certainly on board. With these first images, we can perhaps expect the first teaser of some sort soon with an official release date attached.
HOUSE OF CARDS season six will arrive later this year.
