SPOILERS for JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM. The dinosaurs have been unleashed once again in the latest sequel in the JURASSIC PARK franchise, which is currently raking in the box-office bucks, but a third installment is already in the works which will conclude the JURASSIC WORLD trilogy. Colin Trevorrow will be returning to the director's seat, and he's previously that the third film will be closer in tone to Steven Spielberg's 1993 JURASSIC PARK than either JURASSIC WORLD or JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM. "If I could contextualize each film, I would say Jurassic World was an action adventure, Fallen Kingdom is kind of a horror suspense film, and Jurassic World 3 will be a science thriller in the same way that Jurassic Park was," Trevorrow said. Now that the secrets of FALLEN KINGDOM have been revealed, we have a much better idea on where the trilogy-ender will go.
As we know, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM ended with the dinosaurs being released into the wild, as well as some being transported away by unknown buyers, which sets up the sequel to truly take advantage of the JURASSIC WORLD title. Will this mean that JURASSIC WORLD 3 will showcase dinosaurs running amok all over the world? Here's what Colin Trevorrow told Entertainment Weekly:
No, it will be focused storytelling with dinosaurs all over the world. We really wanted this technology, this genetic power, to go open-source at the end of the film. What we’re suggesting is not just that these specific animals that we care about that were in captivity were freed, but also that the ability to create these animals has gone a little bit wider than our friend Dr. Wu. The open-sourcing of any technology, like nuclear power, that’s the scary side for me.
While speaking with io9, Trevorrow added, "I think any kind of global acceptance that [dinosaurs] are just around doesn’t feel real to me because, even now when you think of animals, when was the last time you saw a tiger walking down the street? We know there are tigers. We know they’re out there. But to me, it’s very important that we keep this grounded in the context of our relationship with wild animals today." The director also hopes that by the time we reach the end of the trilogy, Claire's (Bryce Dallas Howard) line of "no one is impressed by a dinosaur anymore" will be proven completely false. In regards to dinosaurs being unleashed on the world at the end of the film, you might recall seeing some of those moments, such as the Mosasaurus stalking a bunch of swimmers and the T-Rex roaring at a lion, in the trailers for the film, which Colin Trevorrow wasn't too happy about. "It was very frustrating for me," Trevorrow said. "That’s a relationship that we have with marketing [and] there are a lot of different needs. I try to be very lucid and rational about it, [but] to speak frankly, there is a very, very small percentage of people who watch all the trailers. The rest of the world might only see one." We're still several years away from the release of the third film (June 11, 2021), but Trevorrow teased that there is a plan for the larger story arc to come together.
I’ll just say that this has been one long story, and it has been thought through, and it has been designed. I think as people see the choices made in Fallen Kingdom, they’ll put some trust in us that we know where we’re going and we have a plan. I can definitely promise that the third movie will be an emotional movie.
