As San Diego Comic-Con continues to web up new content to share with eager fans of franchises across the entertainment stratosphere, Sony has decided to flex their VENOM muscle, once again, by unleashing more information about the anti-hero’s upcoming solo adventure.
As part of Sony's panel at this year's Comic-Con celebration, the studio offered an eager crowd some juicy new details about the film. Thankfully, our own Paul Shirey was there to gather all the news, and share it with you fine people via our official Twitter feed. I'll be collecting some of Paul's tweets throughout the showcase, and sharing them with you here. Let's get started, True Believers!
To start, Paul was instructed to wear a Venom-themed face mask during the presentation, perfect for that gnarly Comic-Con breath, amiright?

Following their talk, the crowd was shown a new trailer for VENOM that contained a lot more footage than the first two.
Just saw a new trailer for #Venom and it was pretty badass. LOTS more looks at the main character and utilizing the symbiotic as a weapon (axe hands, etc.) and fighting another symbiotic that may or may not be Carnage. #SDCC

The effects of seeing #Venom talk and move are great. Feels like they really nailed his aesthetic. Scary. Cool. Creepy. Violent. And, even a scene where he bits someone’s head off (off screen). #SDCC

Next, Paul weighed in with some of his own thoughts about what he'd just seen.
If there’s one issue I have thus far, it’s that you can’t understand the #Venom voice. It SOUNDS great, but difficult to make out what he’s saying. Looks amazing, though. #SDCC

There is also a female that is taken over by a symbiotic that seems to be out of control and act as an antagonist for #Venom #SDCC

Trailer ends with #Venom and another symbiotic (possibly Carnage) ripping each other apart. Again, the visual style here is on point. Any shortcomings the film may have will easily be overlooked due to how awesome the main character looks (and acts). #SDCC

Tom Hardy and Ruben Fleischer then returned to the stage, more pumped for the film than ever before.
Tom Hardy reiterates that much of #Venom was pulled from the Lethal Protector run in the comics #SDCC

Ruben Fleischer confirms that the antagonist #Venom is fighting is Riot, from the comics. #SDCC

Fleischer says they’re hoping to build off of the Venomverse of characters, so there seems to be a lot of set up to make that happen if #Venom is a success #SDCC

Ruben Fleischer says that he started out in Hollywood as a PA for Dawson’s Creek, where he first encountered Michelle Williams who is now in his movie. #Sony #Venom #SDCC

He’s an awesome actor and I love Spider-Man and I’d love to work with him someday – Tom Hardy on if he’d like to work with Tom Holland as Spider-Man in the future #SDCC

Ruben Fleischer says that it would be pretty awesome to see Spider-Man and Venom square off in a film and that the studio has to be thinking about it and he hopes it happens. #Venom #SDCC

Sounds to me like they’re tap-dancing around Holland’s Spider-Man and Hardy’s #Venom meeting up. Could be playing something close to the chest or just playing it safe as ink may not be dry on it happening. We’ll see. #SDCC

Last but not least, a fan of the site came over to Paul at the end of the presentation to tell us that we're SUPER AWESOME! Thanks so much!
Just had a fan come up and say hello here in Hall H and tell us what a fan he is and that was SUPER AWESOME! Makes it all worth it. We’re nothing without you guys! Thanks to all of you for hanging with us (for 20 years now!)
Lots more Comic Con to come, including WB tomorrow!

Back in February, Sony released a teaser trailer made from unfinished footage that left fans of the character reeling with anger and disappointment. Shortly thereafter, the studio came out swinging with a proper trailer that featured Tom Hardy as the sinister symbiote in all of its chaotic glory. The reveal of Venom’s hulking form was enough to satisfy some Marvel enthusiasts, though in a time when few are willing to give movies the benefit of the doubt before viewing the finished product, there are still many who are waiting to be convinced of the first film slated for Sony’s planned Spider-Verse initiative.
It should prove interesting to hear what people think of the latest details surrounding the project, as there are several other films in development for Sony’s Spider-verse including: MORBIUS, THE LIVING VAMPIRE starring Jared Leto, and SILK featuring Marvel’s Cindy Moon. Meanwhile, Sony’s plans for SILVER & BLACK featuring the characters Silver Sable and Felicia Hardy a.k.a. Black Cat remain in flux at this time. In fact, the last time we'd checked Sony had removed the film from its schedule.
In VENOM, journalist Eddie Brock begins an investigation into the Life Foundation and its equivocal leader, Dr. Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed). After venturing too deep into the mystery, Eddie is exposed to a swirling, black alien mass known as a symbiote. Once bonded with the creature, Eddie is granted unimaginable powers while sharing his thoughts and actions with a bizarre and violent entity called Venom.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (ZOMBIELAND, 20 MINUTES OR LESS) from a script penned by Kelly Marcel and Will Beall, VENOM stars Tom Hardy (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD) as Eddie Brock. Joining Hardy for the decidedly violent solo venture are Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, and Riz Ahmed. VENOM will slither its way into theaters on October 5th.
