I thought I knew what to expect when I heard "written and directed by Jonah Hill," but apparently I did not. A24 has released the NSFW first trailer for Hill's MID90S, a coming-of-age drama which follows Stevie (Sunny Suljic), a thirteen-year-old in 90s-era LA who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop. The film also stars Lucas Hedges (BOY ERASED) as Stevie's older brother, and Katherine Waterston (ALIEN: COVENANT) as his mother. As mentioned above, Hill wrote and directed the upcoming film, and, before he kicked off production last year, had previously told Collider that he was influenced by movies such as Harmony Korine's KIDS and Shane Meadows' THIS IS ENGLAND.
It’s sort of like a coming-of-age drama—it’s the most boring elevator pitch in the world, but it takes place in a skateboarding scene in the mid-90s in L.A…. Skateboarding’s always been put on screen as a joke or an 80s cowabunga kind of trope, and it’s more in the tone of Kids or This Is England. Those are kind of the movies that I’m influenced by the most.
MID90S is slated for an October 19, 2018 release. Check out the new poster below!
