Kelsey Grammer and CBS exploring options for a possible revival of Frasier

Over the past few years we've seen more than a handful of TV series get the revival treatment, ranging from The X-Files to Will & Grace to Rosanne, and it seems that one more iconic 90s' sitcom may be set to make a return. Deadline reports that Kelsey Grammer and CBS TV Studios are currently testing the waters to see if there's potential for a revival of Frasier, which ran for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004.

Frasier began life as a spin-off of Cheers and found Kelsey Grammer reprising his role of Dr. Frasier Crane as he returns to his hometown of Seattle as a radio host. Also starring in the series were David Hyde Pierce as Niles Crane, Frasier's younger brother as well as a fellow psychiatrist, John Mahoney as Martin Crane, Frasier's retired Seattle Police Department detective father, Jane Leeves as Daphne Moon, Martin's live-in physical therapist, and Peri Gilpin as Roz Doyle, the producer of Frasier's radio show. Deadline hears that Kelsey Grammer is meeting with writers who are pitching different concepts for the potential revival, and if one of them strikes a chord, they could move forward, but, the project may be less of a revival and more of a reboot. Grammer would still star in the series, but it would likely be set in a new city. The final episode of Frasier found Dr. Crane leaving Seattle behind to pursue a new opportunity, so there's already a built-in reason for the move.

Deadline's report make no mention of any of the other cast-members of Frasier, but that may be due to just how early on in the process they are. If there's room for the other characters, I'd imagine that they could have a part to play in the revival. I know sitcom revivals are the currently the trend, but Kelsey Grammer got to play Dr. Frasier Crane for over twenty years when you combine his run on both Cheers and Frasier, perhaps it's best to leave the character alone. Plus, the recent passing of John Mahoney leaves me a little cold to the idea of the series returning. That said, I do quite enjoy Frasier and if they're able to come up with an intelligent way to bring it back, I'm willing to give it a chance.
