Cast This: Supergirl

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

As promised, I was setting up a Cast This using one of your suggestions, but then Warner Bros. had the unmitigated gall to begin developing a feature-film based around Supergirl. Imagine that. It's still early days on the project at the moment, but the studio has tapped Oren Uziel (THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX) to pen the screenplay.

Born Kara Zor-El, Supergirl is the biological cousin of Kal-El (Superman), and like her famous relative, Kara was sent to Earth in a rocket by her parents when Brainiac returned to destroy her home of Argo City, which had survived the destruction of Krypton. Supergirl is actually older than Superman, but as her ship was caught in a Kryptonite meteorite during the journey, she was held her in a state of suspended animation. Supergirl possesses many of the same superhuman abilities as her cousin, such as strength, speed, invulnerability, flight, x-ray vision, heat vision, and more.

Assuming that all goes well, the upcoming SUPERGIRL film will actually be the second time that Kara Zor-El has appeared on the big-screen, as Helen Slater played the role in 1984 in the much-criticized SUPERGIRL movie. Although that particular Supergirl project didn't turn out to be a success, audiences have certainly become enamored with the CW's Supergirl TV series which stars Melissa Benoist and will be heading into its fourth season this fall. Deadline, who originally broke the SUPERGIRL news, wasn't sure if Superman (Henry Cavill) would be making an appearance, but said that it could be likely as they pointed to rumours that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are "looking to create a new template for future Superman movies." The DC Universe may actually already contain a possible Supergirl reference, as MAN OF STEEL featured a scene in which Clark Kent was exploring the Kryptonian scout ship and noticed that one of the cryo-tubes was open. A prequel comic for MAN OF STEEL included Kara Zor-El among the crew, but as Warner Bros. has been reshuffling the DC franchise in an effort to get it back on track, I wouldn't count on any plans from the Zack Snyder-era to be carried forward.

Warner Bros. is still likely a ways off from casting Kara Zor-El, but that doesn't meant that we can't get a head start and offer up our two cents. As for who could possibly play Warner Bros.' latest Kryptonian, I'll offer up a few suggestions to get you started. Although Brad Bird's TOMORROWLAND wasn't the success which Disney had hoped it would be, it did introduce me to Britt Robertson, who I feel would be a great fit for Supergirl. Another possible choice is an actress who I've long admired and would love to see take on a big-budget comic-book flick, Imogen Poots (GREEN ROOM). As for my final suggestion, I'll go with Leven Rambin (True Detective), who was frequently included as a possibility when casting for the Supergirl TV series began. What better way to get the last laugh than to snag the role on the big-screen.

Remember, you're free to suggest anyone in the comments, so let your inner casting director run wild!

Previously on Cast This, you were asked to fill the role of Buffy Summers for the upcoming reboot of the Joss Whedon TV series. Although show-runner Monica Owusu-Breen later hinted that the project would be less of a reboot and more of a continuation, you still came through with several intriguing suggestions, including Amandla Stenberg (THE DARKEST MINDS), Samantha Logan (13 Reasons Why), and Storm Reid (A WRINKLE IN TIME).
