Julia Roberts, Lucas Hedges have a touching reunion in Ben is Back teaser

In a short span of two years, Lucas Hedges has gone from unknown young actor to an Oscar-nominated star who has roles in every Best Picture hopeful out there. After following up roles in last year’s LADY BIRD and THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI Hedges is back this year with the gay conversion drama BOY ERASED and the Julia Roberts drama BEN IS BACK, for which a new teaser trailer has dropped. I can’t quite explain it, but it’s almost as if the scent of golden statues accompanies Hedges wherever I see him. Weird.

The short teaser doesn’t reveal too much of the movie, but you can gather enough from the interactions between Roberts, Hedges, and actress Kathryn Newton that you can understand what their relationship is. Taking place over 24 hours, BEN IS BACK finds Ben (Hedges) returning home on Christmas Eve and his mother, Holly (Roberts), trying to ensure that her son stays clean after re-entering their lives. 

Written and directed by Hedges’ father Peter Hedges (DAN IN REAL LIFE, THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN), the movie also stars Courtney B. Vance.

Here is the full synopsis:

19-year-old Ben Burns (Lucas Hedges) unexpectedly returns home to his family's suburban home on Christmas Eve morning. Ben’s mother, Holly (Julia Roberts), is relieved and welcoming but wary of her son staying clean. Over a turbulent 24 hours, new truths are revealed, and a mother's undying love for her son is tested as she does everything in her power to keep him safe.

BEN IS BACK hits theaters December 7.
