Legion’s Petter Calloway to transform video-game Alan Wake into a TV series

Variety has reported that Alan Wake is set to become a live-action TV series as Peter Calloway, best known for his work on Cloak & Dagger and Legion, will be developing the video-game as he's signed on as the showrunner and writer. The game followed best-selling thriller novelist Alan Wake as he tried to uncover the mystery of his wife's disappearance during a vacation in the town of Bright Falls, Washington. Throughout the story, Alan experienced events from the plot of his latest novel, which he couldn't remember writing, coming to life.

Alan Wake creator Sam Lake has come onboard as an executive producer, with game studio Remedy Entertainment and Contradiction Films also backing the project. Contradiction Films' Tomas Harlan said, "'Alan Wake’ was basically a TV series that was put into a game. That was Sam’s vision. It was influenced by ‘The Twilight Zone,’ ‘Secret Window,’ Hitchcock, ‘Northern Exposure,’ a lot of U.S. television. We plan to work closely with Sam on our this show. Sam is a huge part of this. This is his baby." Sam Lake added that the TV series will also tap into some of the story which was planned for the unreleased Alan Wake sequel.

The story of the original game is our starting point, the seed which will grow into the bigger story we’re exploring in the show. We’ll be expanding the lore of this crazy and dark universe and diving deeper into certain aspects of it than the game ever did. Not only that, but through the years, we’ve worked on multiple game concepts and stories for Alan Wake’s world that have never seen the light of day. All of this material will function as potential source material for the show.

Speaking of a sequel, Tomas Harlan hopes that if the show is a success, it might finally get Alan Wake 2 off the ground, but Sam Lake isn't so sure. "At the moment, there is no news of any further ‘Alan Wake’ games," Lake said. "As before, we’re exploring these possibilities and hoping to make it happen when the time is right."
