Chilling Adventures of Sabrina gets a wickedly dark first teaser

Sabrina the Teenage Witch is coming back to TV, but in a very, very, very, very, very different light than when we last saw her. Gone is the cutesy show with plucky characters and here is a malevolent, dark, black and red version fit with seances, dark magic and horned demons. The first teaser for CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA puts all of that on display with the creepiest iteration of the birthday song ever is sung as evil sorcery goes on in the background. For Sabrina’s birthday she’s being welcomed into the world of witches; I got…a new journal, I think?

 Kiernan Shipka stars as the title character in what looks like a terrifying, mad take on the character, which is inspired by the more recent run of comics of the same name by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. There’s plenty of demonic, Cthulu-esque imagery here, and it really digs deep into the dark territory we were promised. The rest of the cast is fleshed out by Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair and more.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.
