THIS WEEK'S PICKS

Wanna watch something….that says "F&@k Batman"?

TITANS (Premieres October 12th on DC Universe) – The riskiest part of DC's new streaming service is whether the original series can hold their own to make the price worth paying over the more easily accessible shows on network television. The edgy trailers released so far make Titans look pretty good but I am not completely sold that it will get me to buy the app. Still, I cannot wait to find out of our first live action Dick Grayson since Chris O'Donnell can prove the sidekick is a hero in his own right.

Wanna watch something….Timey Wimey?

DOCTOR WHO (Premieres October 7th on BBC America) – The revival age of the iconic BBC genre series takes another major leap by giving us the first female Doctor. Whovians are a very inclusive fanbase so I would expect the series to be an instant hit, but the bigger question is how Jodie Whittaker will distinguish herself from the great turns by Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi. With all new companions and stories on the way, we won't have to wait much longer to find out.

Wanna watch something….to Light the Fire against the First Order?

STAR WARS RESISTANCE (Premieres October 7th Disney XD) – While I am not sold on the animation style of this new series, any STAR WARS is good STAR WARS. The animated series Clone Wars and Rebels have been much better than you think and the fact that they are all considered canon means fans should be watching for clues about future feature films. Since this will be the first series set directly in the time period of the new trilogy, we get to see some very familiar faces which should help the wait for EPISODE IX move a little quicker.

Wanna watch something….that begins the end of Rick Grimes?

THE WALKING DEAD (Premieres October 7th on AMC) – I am getting tired of The Walking Dead. At this point, I am hate watching the series to see if it can reclaim the glory of it's early seasons only to regularly be disappointed. But, with Andrew Lincoln departing the show, something that deviates greatly from the comic book, the new season becomes even more relevant. How Rick Grimes will depart the show and whether it is even worth watching without our hero is enougn reason to tune in. Having seen the first episode, I can say comic fans should recognize some major plot elements and could put two and two together for how Rick may exit the show.

Wanna watch something….with the Fastest Man Alive?

THE FLASH (Premieres October 9th on The CW)The small screen DC superhero series have always been consistently good even if they have seasons that lag in quality. The Flash has been the best of the bunch for a while now and the new season looks to continue that trend. Introducing Barry and Iris' daughter adds an intriguing plot element this season and took the focus in the trailers away from who this year's villain is going to be. Hopefully they take a different approach than every previous season and just have Barry face smaller foes rather than one big nemesis.

Wanna watch something….scary as hell?

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (Premieres Friday, October 12th on Netflix) – This is a very, very scary show and one of the best things Netflix has released to date. Director Mike Flanagan manages to make this a terrifying story of the supernatural but also a very nuanced look at a family in crisis. Visceral horror are coupled with some visually haunting imagery that sticks with you long after the final episode. I warn you that you are going to lose ten hours of your night when you binge this and you better start with all the lights on. Check out our full review here.

Wanna watch something….that is violent and disturbing?

APOSTLE (Premieres Friday, October 12th on Netflix) – When the director of THE RAID makes a new movie, you check it out immediately. When it airs on Netflix, you have no reason to not jump aboard right away. The trailers make this look like a mix of THERE WILL BE BLOOD and THE WICKER MAN but with a lot of gory action. I want to know as little as possible going into this movie which could be a nice treat just before Halloween. Check out our full review here.

Wanna watch something….from the creator of Mad Men?

THE ROMANOFFS (Premieres October 12th on Amazon Prime) – With a cast full of stars including Jack Huston, Christina Hendricks, Corey Stoll, Aaron Eckhart, Radha Mitchell, John Slattery, Noah Wyle, and many more, this anthology series is loosely connected by characters who are one way or another linked to the infamous Romanoff aristocracy. The finished result is a mixed bag of dramatic and comedic episodes but when they come from the creator of Mad Men, you check them all out before you make a final judgement call.
