Dave Bautista is ready to join up for James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Although it was shocking when Disney parted ways with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY writer/director James Gunn over a series of old, offensive tweets, there was little doubt that he'd bounce back as many studios said that they were eager to land him. News broke this afternoon that Warner Bros. had signed James Gunn to write and possibly direct the SUICIDE SQUAD sequel, and it seems that one of his GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY stars is already hoping to sign up.

After reading the news of James Gunn taking on SUICIDE SQUAD, Dave Bautista shared the report on Twitter and added, "where do I sign up?" Bautista has been quite vocal of his displeasure with Disney over their handling of the James Gunn situation, so it's not exactly surprising that the actor would be eager to follow Gunn over from Marvel to DC. Will it happen? Who knows, but I wouldn't bet against it.

THE ACCOUNTANT director Gavin O’Connor was slated to helm the SUICIDE SQUAD sequel, and Variety's Justin Kroll took to Twitter to say that he had heard that the story which O'Connor had developed wound up being almost identical to the story for BIRDS OF PREY. When the studio elected to tackle BIRDS OF PREY before SUICIDE SQUAD 2, O'Connor "grew frustrated" and departed. It's also been said that James Gunn won't be developing a true sequel to SUICIDE SQUAD, but rather a brand-new take which will allow Gunn to put his own spin on the franchise. David Ayer, who wrote and directed the first SUICIDE SQUAD, was asked how he felt about James Gunn potentially changing all of his hard work, but said that he thinks "it’s an incredibly brave and smart move by the studio. James is the right man for the job!"
