Get ready, Freddies, because the awards season is officially in swing with the announcement of 2018 Gotham Awards. Presented by the Independent Filmmaker Project, nominees for the awards are selected by a committee of critics, journalists, film curators and festival programmers, who nominated films across ten categories. Though focusing on the world of independent movies, the Gotham Awards are seen as a solid precursor of what’s in the discussion come the rest of the awards season.

On that note, critic darlings such as THE FAVOURITE and FIRST REFORMED got some major play here, both being nominated for three awards, including Best Feature, Best Screenplay. The third nominations are for the movies’ performances, with Ethan Hawke nabbing a Best Actor nom for REFORMED, with the ensemble of Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz earned a special jury prize for Best Ensemble.
Other nominees include the horror hit HEREDITARY, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, EIGHTH GRADE, IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK and LEAVE NO TRACE. There’re also two categories for TV, with shows like BIG MOUTH and THE END OF THE F**KING WORLD getting nominations.
Movies like MOONLIGHT, BIRDMAN, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, GET OUT and many more started their journey to the Oscars here, earning numerous nominations and proving they had the clout to have a stake in the game. It’s still early, but expect to see some of these titles show up again and again as the season progresses.
