Margot Robbie offers her perspective on Birds of Prey’s winking movie title

I'll be the first to admit that when SUICIDE SQUAD and I, TONYA star Margot Robbie revealed the full title of DC's upcoming BIRDS OF PREY movie, my eyes nearly rolled out the back of my head. I thought, "Oh c'mon, DC! You've got to be kidding me. Haven't you taken enough wrong turns on the road toward presenting your cinematic universe?" However, that was the old me. After giving it some thought, I've come around to the film's new title, BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN), after reaching the conclusion that it's just as insane as the movie's title character, Harley Quinn. For real, if what I've wanted is for DC to shake things up, this is certainly one way of doing it.

On Monday night, the blonde bombshell that plays Daddy's Little Monster stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and at one point in the programming, offered her personal take on the "more than a mouthful" title. In fact, with a smile as bright as the sun, Robbie told Fallon that, "It's not a very serious movie, so we thought the title should reflect that. Birds of Prey makes it sound very serious and that's kind of like Harley adding her, like, 'Hey, don't worry. I'm in this too,'"

Robbie continued to elaborate by adding, "I love a long title," she explained. "I said that when we were thinking of the title. I was like, 'You know what? You know what's a great title?' Did you ever see The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out a Window and Disappeared? Long title, but I love it."

After sharing her take on the title of Harley's next big screen outing, Fallon pointed out to her that I, TONYA is an exceedingly short title for a film. Robbie then confessed to the audience that "The writer wanted to call it I, Tonya because I think a marketing executive told him once that no title with a comma in it could ever be successful," she shared. "He was like, 'Well, f—k you. I'm gonna put a comma in the title.'"

Granted, that last bit is irrelevant to the topic at hand, but I'll be damned if Robbie isn't delightful beyond words. I suppose it feels good to have a bit of background with regard to the BIRDS OF PREY movie title. After all, DC and Warner Bros. taking themselves too seriously has been a chief complaint of those looking for the DCEU to lighten up, just a little bit. Perhaps with the upcoming release of AQUAMAN and SHAZAM! we'll be seeing a whole new side of DC real soon. Either way, BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN) is not just a ballsy title, it's downright hilarious. You do you, DC.
