Colin Trevorrow says dinosaurs won’t terrorize cities in Jurassic World 3

Despite the fact JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM was met with so-so reactions this summer the movie became one of the biggest of the year, making over $1.3 billion around the world. The finale of the movie set the stage for the inevitable third and (hopefully) final outing, and now that the dinos are loose returning director Colin Trevorrow opened up about how the prehistoric creatures will behave now that they have seven billion meals waiting for them around the globe.

In case you forgot, FALLEN KINGDOM ended with the dinosaurs released unto the world, going off into the wild, ready to re-inherit the world. This immediately conjures images of a T-Rex storming through Los Angeles or a pack of Triceratops stampeding through Times Square, but Trevorrow recently told Jurassic Outpost that the dinos would not be striking the cities, and they would instead be taking a more natural approach to their behavior.

"I just have no idea what would motivate dinosaurs to terrorize a city. They can’t organize. Right now we’ve got lethal predators in wild areas surrounding cities all over the world. They don’t go pack hunting for humans in urban areas. The world I get excited about is the one where it’s possible that a dinosaur might run out in front of your car on a foggy backroad, or invade your campground looking for food. A world where dinosaur interaction is unlikely but possible—the same way we watch out for bears or sharks. We hunt animals, we traffic them, we herd them, we breed them, we invade their territory and pay the price, but we don’t go to war with them. If that was the case, we’d have lost that war a long time ago."

Trevorrow directed the fourth JURASSIC PARK movie – JURASSIC WORLD – which became an unexpected behemoth making $1.5 billion around the world and over $650 million domestically. For the sequel, he took a backseat as co-writer and producer, with J.A. Bayona taking directing duties. But this time around he’s back in the big chair, and though he loves what Bayona and cinematographer Oscar Faura did with the movie’s look, he is looking to make his movie have a feel unique.

“JA and Oscar shot a beautiful film. If I’m being honest, I’d say they shot such a beautiful film, I’m not even looking to try and match it. They achieved something so gorgeous to look at, my instinct is to break the classical language of these films a bit and plunge us into a world that feels real and naturalistic. I want to go outside into environments we’ve never seen these animals in. I’m watching a lot of Planet Earth.”

FALLEN KINGDOM was a disappointment to many, earning some of the worst reviews of the series, but ending on a note that may keep viewers coming back for one more outing. Surely the idea of dinosaurs on the loose sounds more exciting than these past two installments, so here’s to hoping that whatever they come up with it ends things on a higher note than these past movies. Seriously, at least one dinosaur needs to crash through a building, and Sam Neill has to come back and say, “I’m getting too old this shit.”

JURASSIC WORLD 3 is set for June 11, 2021.
