The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced they would be giving Bridges the award to honor his incredible film career, spanning movies like THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, STARMAN, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, CRAZY HEART, TRUE GRIT, IRON MAN and so, so much more. HFPA president Meher Tatna put out a statement (via Variety) with the announcement, saying Bridges is a performer who has been entertaining the world for decades, and the award will recognize his amazing career.
“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is delighted to bestow the 2019 Cecil B. DeMille Award on Jeff Bridges. Bridges has been nominated for five Golden Globes, his first being for the movie STARMAN in 1985, and later for the movies THE FISHER KING and THE CONTENDER. He ended up winning one for his later Oscar-winning work in the movie CRAZY HEART and was nominated most recently for the movie HELL OR HIGH WATER, playing the grizzled Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton. With the DeMille award, he joins the ranks of other major Hollywood icons such as Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams, Morgan Freeman, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Walt Disney, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Barbra Streisand, Sophia Loren and more.
Like with every award he's ever won, Bridges deserves this honor for essentially kicking ass for the last few decades. A reliable actor who consistently delivers in everything he does, he's also been a champion for environmental issues, releasing the documentary LIVING IN THE FUTURE'S PAST this year. He will give a speech during the ceremony in a few weeks, and no doubt he will dispense some words of wisdom we can all learn from.
