Patrick Stewart inspires a king in new The Kid Who Would Be King trailer

You all know the story of Arthur, the famous character who pulled the sword Excalibur from the stone, became king, and then went on a journey that pits him against the Knights Who Say “Ni!” This tale has been told time and time again with varying budgets, but in THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING from director Joe Cornish (ATTACK THE BLOCK), we get a modern spin on the story with wise-cracking kids replacing bearded knights. The new trailer for the movie delivers on the action and humor, showing off Patrick Stewart as the ancient wizard Merlin, who disguises himself as a young man who works at a chicken joint (#CareerGoals).

We’ve seen plenty of takes on the Arthurian legend, the most notable of the last decade or so being KING ARTHUR from Antoine Fuqua and starring Clive Owen, and then last year’s bloated KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD from Guy Ritchie and starring Charlie Hunnam. This new movie may not be a giant blockbuster, but it looks fun enough for certain age groups and could be a fresh take on the story that we all don’t know we need. Cornish has played with genres before with BLOCK and ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, so I don’t see why he can’t do the same here.

Most of the cast is fleshed out by young stars, namely Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Dean Chaumoo, Tom Taylor, Rhianna Dorris, Angus Imrie, with vets Rebecca Ferguson and Stewart lending their talents as well. Here’s the plot synopsis for the movie:

Old school magic meets the modern world in the epic adventure THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING. Alex (Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he's just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Ferguson). With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be.
